We are Mathematicians

Intent:
At our school, we want our children to see themselves as capable, confident mathematicians. We aim to nurture a positive attitude towards maths from the very start, helping children to feel curious, secure, and ready to explore numbers, patterns, and problems. Maths is all around us – and we want our children to understand how it connects to real life, from telling the time to sharing snacks, building with blocks, or spotting shapes on a walk. Our goal is for every child to develop strong number sense, clear reasoning skills, and the resilience to keep going, even when something feels tricky.

Implementation:
Maths teaching begins in the Early Years through hands-on exploration, play and talk – helping children to build a deep, practical understanding of numbers, shape, space and measure. As they move through school, we follow a carefully sequenced curriculum (White Rose) that focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Concepts are introduced in small steps, with plenty of time to revisit and practise. We use a wide range of resources, models and representations to help children make sense of mathematical ideas, and encourage discussion and questioning in every lesson. Children are supported and challenged at all levels, with careful attention to building confidence alongside accuracy.

Impact:
By the end of KS2, our children are fluent with key facts and methods, but also able to think flexibly, explain their reasoning and apply their knowledge in different situations. They see mistakes as part of learning and approach challenges with perseverance and a sense of achievement. We see children take pride in solving problems, enjoy working collaboratively and feel confident sharing their thinking aloud. Most importantly, they leave us with a positive mindset about maths – ready for the next stage of learning and equipped with skills they’ll use throughout life.
