We are Musicians

Intent:
At Clapham & Patching, we believe that music is a joyful, expressive subject that brings people together. We want our children to experience the joy of making music, to feel the rhythm, explore different sounds, and grow in confidence as performers, listeners and creators. Music helps children express emotions, develop focus, and connect with different cultures and traditions. Whether they're tapping a beat, singing in harmony, or composing their own melodies, we want every child to feel that their musical voice matters.

Implementation:
Music begins in the Early Years with songs, movement, and simple instruments – giving children the chance to explore sound and develop a sense of rhythm and pitch through play. As they move up through school, they build on these foundations with structured lessons that include singing, listening, performing and composing. Children learn to use instruments, read simple notation, and work both independently and in groups. Our curriculum includes music from a wide range of genres, cultures and historical periods, helping children to listen with curiosity and appreciation. We also offer enrichment through performances, assemblies, clubs and opportunities to learn instruments with visiting teachers.

Impact:
By the end of KS2, our children have a well-rounded musical understanding. They can perform with confidence, listen with sensitivity, and talk about music using key vocabulary. They enjoy expressing themselves through sound and feel proud of what they create. Music gives our children the chance to shine in different ways – whether through quiet creativity, bold performance, or simply sharing a song together. Above all, they leave us with a love of music that we hope will stay with them for life.
