We are Writers
Intent:
At Clapham & Patching, we want every child to see themselves as a confident writer who can express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly and creatively. Writing is about more than just spelling and grammar – it’s a way to tell stories, share opinions, and communicate with others. We aim to inspire a love of writing by giving children meaningful reasons to write, helping them build strong skills step by step, and encouraging them to take pride in their work.
Implementation:
Writing begins in the Early Years with talk, mark-making, and storytelling, helping children understand that writing is a way to capture ideas. As they move through school, children learn to write for different purposes and audiences – from imaginative stories and poems to letters, reports, and instructions. We teach spelling, punctuation, and grammar alongside creativity, with lots of opportunities to practise, revise, and improve. Writing is often linked to topics and real-life contexts to make it relevant and engaging. We celebrate writing through displays, performances, and sharing work with others.
Impact:
By the time they leave us, our children write with confidence and clarity. They can organise their ideas well, use vocabulary that suits the task, and show care with spelling and punctuation. More importantly, they enjoy writing and understand it as a powerful tool to express themselves and connect with others. We see children who are proud of their writing journeys – who aren’t afraid to take risks, make mistakes, and keep improving. Writing at our school helps children become effective communicators and creative thinkers for life.
