We love Languages

Intent:
At Clapham & Patching, we want our children to see language learning as exciting, joyful, and full of possibility. Through learning Spanish in KS2, we aim to open a window into other cultures and ways of life, helping our children become curious, respectful, and confident global citizens. We want them to enjoy playing with language, building vocabulary, and beginning to express themselves in a new way. Most of all, we want them to realise that learning another language is something they can do – and that it's a skill that can take them far.

Implementation:
Spanish is taught weekly across KS2 through fun, practical and engaging lessons. We focus on building children’s confidence in speaking and listening first, using songs, games, storytelling and conversation to make learning feel natural and enjoyable. As they progress, we gradually introduce reading and writing, helping children to use simple phrases and sentences with increasing accuracy. Topics are chosen to feel relevant and meaningful – from greetings and food to families, festivals and daily routines – always supported by clear pronunciation practice and opportunities to revisit and build on what they’ve learned.

Impact:
By the end of Year 6, our children can understand and respond to simple spoken and written Spanish, and are able to hold short conversations, ask questions, and write basic sentences with confidence. More than that, they leave with a real sense of achievement and a positive attitude towards learning languages. They are interested in other cultures, open to new experiences, and ready to take the next steps in language learning at secondary school. Spanish at our school helps children grow in confidence, communication, and curiosity – and reminds them that language is something to be enjoyed and shared.
